SIMONA HALEP SEPULTA A MARIA KIRILENKO EN EL US OPEN 2013

HALEP_KIRILENKO 61 60
The Romanian came into her third-round match with Maria Kirilenko having won 33 of her last 38 matches — a streak that catapulted her into the Top 20 for the first time. On Saturday in Louis Armstrong Stadium, she stayed hot with a dominant 6-1, 6-0 dismissal of the No. 17 Russian. Kirilenko sprinted out to a 40-love start on her serve only to be broken by Halep to start the match. The 21-year-old Romanian reeled off 18 of the next 24 points to grab an early 4-0 edge by a double break. Kirilenko didn’t hold serve until 19 minutes into the match, but she would later double fault the set away in a mere 25 minutes. Halep, a retriever extraordinaire, kept it rolling in the second set, winning eight unanswered points in surging to a 2-0 lead.
She seemed to have an answer for anything that the No. 17 seed threw at her. Down 4-0, the 26-year-old Kirilenko cracked her racquet on the court and received a warning from the chair umpire, but the show of frustration did nothing to turn the tide. Before she knew it, Halep was breaking her for the match, which ended in a mere 50 minutes.

FLAVIA PENNETTA ADVANCES IN US OPEN 2013.

PENNETTA_KUZNETSOVA 75 61
Coming back onto the WTA Tour after missing much of 2012 due to a wrist injury, the former No. 10 Pennetta made a positive step toward rebuilding her ranking with a 7-5, 6-1 win over the 2004 US Open champion. Both women produced solid play in baseline rallies through most of the first set, until Kuznetsova’s shots started to fail her on serve at 5-5.
When three consecutive Kuznetsova shots sent wide, Pennetta had the break and the chance to serve for the set, which she was able to do when another Kuznetsova shot sailed long. By then, the Russian’s game had fallen apart, and three straight breaks on her serve allowed the Italian to take a 5-0 lead. One trade of breaks later, and Pennetta had finally claimed her first win over Kuznetsova.
The Russian finished the match with 35 unforced errors to Pennetta’s 13.

ALISON RISKE WIN IN 3 ROUND OF US OPEN 2013. KVITOVA OUT

RISKE_KVITOVA 63 60

American Alison Riske lost a tough three-set match to No. 7 seed Petra Kvitova last week at the Emirates Airline US Open Series event in New Haven, but it seems that she learned from that experience. Playing the best match of her career today in their third round women's singles match, the wild-card ranked No. 81 landed 70 percent of her first serves and nailed 12 winners while only hitting seven errors, breaking serve five times and winning the final eight games in shocking Kvitova, 6-3, 6-0.
After going winless in her last four visits to the US Open, Riske is now into the fourth round. "It was really emotional for me," said Riske. "It's cool because I feel like I'm playing within myself and not doing anything too crazy. It's just really comfortable for me out there." Both women started out strongly in the first set, stepping into the court and hitting numerous winners. But when Kvitova dropped her guard slightly by hitting a double fault to give Riske a 3-2 lead, the American took full advantage. Hitting her returns mere inches from the baseline, she pinned the powerful Czech back and didn't allow her to dictate the rallies. Becoming frustrated, Kvitova began to spray her ground strokes, hiring two straight forehand errors at 3-5 to give Riske the opening set.
The 2011 Wimbledon champion continued to fight, but Riske was in full flight. She won a titanic game in the second game of the second set to go up an early break and continued to run with the momentum. Kvitova dumped a routine forehand volley into the net on game point serving at 0-3 and appeared dejected afterwards, hitting another double fault to give Riske a 4-0 lead. The Czech player struggled with her serve throughout, hitting seven double faults on the day. Riske closed out the match at 5-0 with a backhand winner, raising her arms in delight.

JANCOVIC TO ENTER IN ROUND OF 16. US OPEN 2013

JANCOVIC_KURUMI NARA 64 76
After falling out of the top 20 one year ago, former No. 1 Jelena Jankovic is steadily trying to make her way back to the top of the WTA. The journey has been full of frustrations and triumphs for the current world No. 12. Her third-round match against Kurumi Nara of Japan was no different. After nearly two hours of play that featured exceptional tennis on Court 17, Jankovic prevailed in a gritty 6-4, 7-6 victory to advance to the round of 16. Playing against a qualifier who had nothing to lose and a healthy amount of confidence heading into the match, Jankovic had a considerable test on her hands. Nara, ranked No. 109, made her US Open debut in impressive fashion, taking out No. 73 Alexandra Cadantu of Romania in the first round, then cleared another Romanian hurdle in No. 19 seed Sorana Cirstea. From the start of the match, there didn’t appear to be a large margin of difference between the two women’s games. Jankovic had overwhelming power, particularly from the backhand wing, that she used to outhit the 21-year-old Japanese newcomer, but Nara had a few tricks up her sleeve in the form of touch volleys and well-placed passing shots.

The opening set stayed even until the end, when Jankovic broke Nara at 5-4 to take the lead. The second set was a shaky back-and-forth battle that featured eight breaks of serve, with three of the first four breaks favoring Nara for a 5-2 lead. The deficit sparked a run from Jankovic, who won the next three games to level it at 5-5. Just when it looked like the Serbian had righted the ship, Nara used a lunging volley winner and a drop shot to break Jankovic for a chance to serve for the match. But it wasn’t to be for Nara, as she failed to hold serve yet again, and a tiebreak followed. Just as the entire match had played out until this point, the tiebreak was a close fight to the very end. At 5-5, two consecutive netted forehands from Nara handed Jankovic the match.

SLOANE STEPHENS IN ROUND OF 16. US OPEN 2013

SLOANE STEPHENS_JAMIE HAMPTON 61 63
The fleet, young American Sloane Stephens has discovered a new gear since her tentative and shaky opening-round match, which may have served as a wake-up call. Stephens cruised easily in the next round and on Friday afternoon sprinted past her compatriot, Jamie Hampton, 6-1, 6-3, in just 63 minutes. Hampton, 23, playing in her first major as a seeded player, looked considerably less comfortable inside massive Arthur Ashe Stadium. The Alabaman was unable to find her rhythm and the open court, and she sprayed 34 unforced errors. Though three years Hampton’s junior, Stephens has considerably more experience on the big stage.

She was a semifinalist at the Australian Open and is now 15-3 in majors this year. Both players have experienced meteoric rises in the rankings: Stephens entered the Top 100 in 2011 and has shot up to No. 16, while Hampton has vaulted from No. 628 three years ago to reach her current ranking and career high of No. 26. They are both impressive athletes with smooth groundstrokes and no fear of coming forward, and each has claimed two victories over Top 10 players this year. But Stephens sails more easily around the court and is more explosive, especially with her principal weapon, a forehand that she can whip with violent racquet speed. “It was tough to play Jamie, a good friend,” Stephens told ESPN’s Pam Shriver on court after her victory.

“This year has been a learning process – I love you too!” Stephens interrupted herself to answer a fan’s admiring call from the stands, “and I have just improved so much.” Stephens broke serve three times in the opening set en route to a 6-1 lead, and though Hampton appeared to be getting her teeth into the match in the second set, Stephens kept the pressure up. In the end, she played important points with more composure than her fellow Fed Cup teammate. Fittingly, Stephens broke serve for the sixth time to make her first appearance in the round of 16 at the US Open.

SERENA WILLIAMS INTRATABLE EN EL US OPEN 2013

SERENA WILLIAMS_GALINA VOSKOBOEVA 63 60

He estado entrenando mucho.

PENNETTA WIN 2 ROUND

PENNETTA_ERRANI 63 61

Flavia Pennetta dealt countrywoman, Italian Fed Cup teammate and good friend Sara Errani, a disappointing second round exit with a decisive 6-3, 6-1 win over the No. 4 seed, posting one of the biggest upsets on the women’s side of the draw so far. The athletic Pennetta served up seven aces in the match - including a well-placed, slice second serve – and averaged 103 mph on her first serve. She frustrated Errani by playing tough defense, chasing down every ball and giving her friend a taste of her own medicine with well-timed drop shots and searing winners down the line -- usually Errani’s specialty.

Errani had lots of problems with her serve, often having to repeatedly throw her toss after directing the ball behind her several times. Though both Italians are a few of the more vocal players on court, Pennetta played a quiet and poised hard-nosed match, letting her shot-making speak for itself. “We spend so much time together, it’s not easy to play your friend,” Pennetta said following the match.

“When you play one of your best friends, it’s not easy to [celebrate] and be really loud.” The 31-year-old Pennetta has a career 4-2 record over Errani and was a tough draw for the young Italian, who had a breakout tournament here last year when she made it the women’s singles semi-finals and won the doubles title with teammate Roberta Vinci.

She remains in the women’s doubles tournament with Vinci, where they are the No. 1 seed.

VENUS WILLIAMS SE DESPIDE DEL US OPEN 2012

VENUS WILLIAMS_ZHENG 63 26 76

Agnieszka Radwanska advanced to the third round of the US Open 2013

RADWANSKA_TORRO FLOR 60 75
Despite some uneven play on her part, No. 3 seed Agnieszka Radwanska of Poland advanced to the third round of the US Open on Wednesday with a 6-0, 7-5 win over No. 103-ranked Spaniard Maria-Teresa Torro-Flor in Louis Armstrong Stadium.
Torro-Flor had reached the second round at Roland Garros and Wimbledon, too, but the newcomer had yet to face a Top 5 opponent before and at times it showed. Making her main-draw debut here, she struggled to work her way into the match, managing only five points on her serve in the 21-minute first set.

The 21-year-old turned the tables by breaking Radwanska to open the second set, but after jumping out 40-0 on her next service game, she could not consolidate and was broken back. The Pole appeared to lose her focus midway through the set, allowing Torro-Flor her second break of the match.
There was a moment of levity when the stadium’s loudspeakers began picking up crossed radio signals. The pause appeared to reenergize Radwanska, who responded by breaking back yet again. She scored another in the eighth game of the second set to go up 5-3, but squandered a match point when she had a chance to serve it out.

To her credit, Torro-Flor hung in there, evening the set at 5-5, riding a flat forehand that’s not typically seen in Spanish players. But Radwanska would hold serve, then break her opponent to seal the match. Radwanska’s lone blemish was the fact that her first-serve percentage dipped from 64 percent in the first set to 53 percent in the second. She’ll need to fine-tune her game from the service stripe if she’s going to reach the second week here. Torro-Flor finished with 10 double faults.

JULIA GOERGES CEDE ANTE MCHALE EN EL US OPEN 2013

MChALE_GOERGES 64 63

Tuesday afternoon on Grandstand brought a much-needed turn of events for Christina McHale, once thought to be among America's brightest prospects, as she produced a steady and impressive performance to defeat the dangerous Julia Goerges 6-4, 6-3 in the first round.
The 21-year-old New Jersey native made full use of the force of the raucous Grandstand crowd in immediately putting Goerges, who like McHale has had a tough time on the North American cement this summer, on the back foot, earning an immediate break point opportunity in the opening game.
It was not to be on that occasion, Goerges channelling her ability to pull a winner from nowhere when she most needed it. But McHale, who sprung to the fore right here on these courts when she reached the third round in 2011, aptly ceased the match. Snatching the break out of Goerges' hands, McHale took full advantage of the German's descent into a quagmire of unforced errors, winning more than 60 percent of rallies that went beyond four shots.
Geoerges had four chances to break back as McHale served for the opening set, but could not convert, and the American's resurgence into relevancy moved one step closer.

PETRA KVITOVA ADVANCE TO THE SECOND ROUND IN US OPEN 2013

KVITOVA_MISAKI DOI 62 36 61

Playing on a windy Arthur Ashe Stadium on Tuesday, No. 7 seed Petra Kvitova had an up and down match in her first round 6-2, 3-6, 6-1 victory over Misaki Doi of Japan.
The six-foot Kvitova started the match strongly and looked as though she was going to overpower the comparatively diminutive Doi, who stands at five-foot-3.

The No. 7 seeded Czech player had a massive lapse in concentration in the second set, however, committing 15 unforced errors. Doi smartly recognized an opening and upped her game, serving at well placed angles and dictating points, dragging Kvitova all over the court to force a third set.

After a lengthy bathroom break between sets, Kvitova came back swinging and immediately asserted herself by breaking Doi’s first service game in the third set and capably closed out the match to advance to the second round.

ANA IVANOOVIC WIN FIRST ROUND IN US OPEN 2013.

IVANOVIC_TATISHVILI 62 60

In a battle between women of the same first name (one with an extra ‘n’), No. 13 seed Ana Ivanovic prevailed in a crushing 6-2, 6-0 win over Anna Tatishvili of Georgia.
She may not be as much of a household name as Ivanovic, but Tatishvili is no slouch. Only 23 years old, the Georgian made the fourth round in New York last year in only her second US Open appearance. Needless to say, Ivanovic knew she had quite a test on her hands Tuesday.

The entire first set was characterized by aggressive corner-to-corner baseline rallies, with Ivanovic using her strong baseline game to counter Tatishvili’s laser returns.

But both women struggled on serve, as only two of the eight games in the first set were holds, both belonging to Ivanovic. The 23-minute second set was all Ivanovic, who took commanding control of the rallies and raced to a 5-0 lead while only surrendering three points on her serve.
A double fault from Tatishvili on match point handed the Serbian the match in just under an hour.
Ivanovic and world No. 115 Tatishvili had only met once before, on the grass at Birmingham in 2011, a contest in which Ivanovic ruthlessly dealt the Georgian a similar 6-1, 6-0 loss

VENUS WILLIAMS WIN IN FIRST ROUND. US OPEN 2013.

VENUS WILLIAMS_FLIPKENS 61 62

Kirsten Flipkens of Belgium might be higher ranked than two-time US Open champion Venus Williams, but you wouldn’t have known it from the way their opening round match went in Arthur Ashe Stadium.
Williams, currently ranked No. 60, utilized punishing ground strokes to make timely trips to the net for winning volleys, hammering down 17 winners to advance into the second round with a 6-1, 6-2 victory.
With today’s victory, Williams also avenged a first round loss to Flipkens earlier this month in Cincinnati and racked up just her second tour level win this year since the WTA Tour event in Charleston in April.
Williams looked sharp in the early stages of the match, hammering eight winners to race to a 4-0 lead in 15 minutes.
Meanwhile, Flipkens, who advanced to the semifinals at Wimbledon this year, struggled with her serve throughout the set. She had five doubles faults in her four service games, while her second serve sat up in the strike zone of the former world No. 1 and allowed her to win only 8 percent of her second serve points.
A double fault by Flipkens wrapped up the opening set for Williams after just 27 minutes of play. A strong forehand return of serve by Williams gave her an early break of serve to lead 2-0 in the second set, but the No. 12 seed wasn’t going down without a fight.
Hitting her returns of serve earlier and charging the net more aggressively, she put Williams on the defensive for the first time of the match and earned the break of serve back.
That led to a titanic, seven-deuce game at 2-2 in the second set, which featured some of the best points in the match. Both women had game points, but Williams finally ripped a forehand cross-court winner to take the game.

HAMPTON WIN IN US OPEN 2013. FIRST ROUND

HAMPTON_ARRUABARRENA 64 62
Twenty-three-year-old Jamie Hampton of Auburn, Ala., came out strong in her round first-round match, posting a two sets, win over Lara Arruabarrena. Hampton ripped four aces and plenty of powerful cross-court winners past the Spaniard in her advancing to the second round of the US Open for the first time.
She exited in the first round in her prior three trips to the main draw. The third-highest-ranked American woman in the world, at No. 26, Hampton displayed for the home crowd her tough all-court game and her all-business personality on court, dictating play throughout most of the match and knocking down 28 winners to Arruabarrena’s seven.
She showed great resiliency as well, pulling out some of her fastest and most accurate serves to battle her way out of trouble and to stay in control of the match.
